Thought I would share some thoughts on the remasters: I purchased the Collector's Editions.
Packaging: same as NIN or the Cure's with a double digipack with a plastic slip case. Very nice, extra pix, text from D.Miller and lyrics (for S&S as well).
I could not decide which one to throw on first so I chose the chronological approach. Then I played the SACD Multi channel first, then the DTS 5.1 mix, and lastly the SACD stereo remaster.
Speak & Spell
A massive improvement and a dramatic change in the overall effect of the album. It sounds so much more modern and less limp as before. The mulit channel mix uncovers sounds originally buried in the mix and produces a much more moving and elegant effect. The surround effects are not overdone, anchoring much of the details and background effects in the rear channels, saving the vocals and bass and lead melodies for the front. Even ISWISD sounded great.....now that's what I call an improvement. Photographic is simply incredible, Puppets and Tora3 benefit greatly as well. The DTS mix was the same as the SACD but the added benefits of high fidelity DSD shine through much better on the SACD than on the DTS. The DTS has that overtly digitalness to it that the SACD lacks, and with this album thats a good thing.
Music for the Masses
An album I never liked the sound of to begin with. It has some of my favorite compositions on it, but it always sounded flat and compressed and a bit muddled...and now? Just wait to the drum reverb kicks in on NLMDA, the piano shines through, the guitar loop wails through the speakers and once the song shifts itno it's post bridge grand finale....well then you know the beneifts of SACD and a proper mastering....they did an amazing job with this one. TTYS comes off with so much more atmoshpere, spreading the sound field an synth lead lines throughout the front and rear, Strangelove no longer sounds like it was made in 1986 but has a depth not heard before....and the real winner hear is BTW.....Just wait to you wake up the neighboors with this one. The guitar and synth lines synchronoize between speakers and the bass is amazingly clear. I never heard the guitar distoration so well in Nothing, and PIMPF will kill your ears if you let it.
Once again, the DTS mix was the same mix but had a less impressive and warm impression on me.
Violator
I think some will be slightly divided on this one. The sound field is spread evenly throughout, allowing certain synth riffs, and melodies to unfold around the listener, those who are used to WIME being tight and direct might not like the newfound freedom this song has be granted. It floats and hangs in the air, with the most clarity one could imagine. TSP rolls like thunder around the drum snares and samples....Wait to you hear Halo's first moments....the depthness of the drum in the beginning is superb. The surround mix on most of the tracks are conservative at best. WFTN pulsates around the speakers more than POT for instance, but BD and Clean really benefit from the remastering efforts.
DTS sound: same comments as before.
Stereo Remastering: the two channel SACD mix pulls it alltogether and really gives you a good idea how well these remasters were handled. I compared them with the original redbook cd's and though that is an unfair comparsion, it was just laughable the difference.
And for all those worried about the 'pumped-upness" of the singles remasters. Don't you worry, they did them right this time.
My overall feeling was one of amazement, I have listened to these albums since the day they each were orginally released and I am hearing sounds, vocals, melody lines, samples that I never heard before, a rediscovery and an amazing tribute to these albums.
The video's on the DVD are well worth watching, funny old footage and interviews, concert clips and yes you get see Mr. Wilder talk next to his crackling fire place. It was good to see and hear his take on all this.
sorry gotta go and put them all back on again.
and if you do not have a SACD compatable player...well they are not that expensive!
loving the remasters (and the angels)
